Donny Shankle on Hand Care for Weightlifters

Posted by: Devin Glage

Donny Shankle is bigger than you, stronger than you, and knows more about hand care for weightlifters than you.

When your profession is lifting heavy objects over your head, taking care of your money makers is a must. If you can't hold the bar anymore, your training suffers.

In the following video, Shankle will walk you through how to properly take care of weightlifting hands, and which products he uses (can someone please get this man a RIPT kit?). Specifically a waxy hand balm (a la Quick Fix) rather than a hand cream, and a pumice stone to smooth down dead and dry calluses.

While Donny nails hand care on the head, the only point we would add is that hand-sanding typically works best in the shower when the skin is a bit softer and the stone is wet. RIPT Skin System's synthetic pumice stone has been designed to function like fine-grit sand paper allowing you to essentially wet-sand your calluses to remover dead and dry skin, as well as contour the shape of you calluses, reducing the hard edges, and thus preventing rips.

Taping your hands is also a skill to be mastered for any serious weightlifter. In the second half of the video Donny walks you through how to effectively tape your hands to prevent thumb tears and callus rips while training the snatch, clean and jerk.

My passion for training comes from a burning desire to experience all that life has to give, and a nagging fear that at some point my body will let me down.
